This 21st of July, I wake up at 4.15am to go to see the Merapi volcano. With about 10 other visitors and a guide, we start by crossing a forest then stop to watch the sunrise. We then cross a forest that has been almost completely destroyed by an important eruption at the end of 2010 that destroyed 20 villages and killed over 150 persons who did not want to evacuate in spite of the advice from the vulcanologists.
The Merapi is classified as one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It is monitored closely by vulcanologists from different countries and our guide was in direct contact with the monitoring center.
